Sustainability Award

We spoke with Mr. T.T., recipient of the Sustainability Award (Individual), about his passion for teaching kendo and his engagement with the local community.

What inspired you to become involved in kendo instruction?

I practiced kendo from the first grade of elementary school through my third year of high school. After entering the workforce, I resumed training, and in the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake, I became involved in community-based instruction. Before I knew it, I had been continuing these activities for many years.

How do you balance your work responsibilities with your community activities?

With limited practice time available, I always think about how to teach children as effectively as possible. In addition to sharing techniques and strategies for success, I believe it is important to pass on the fundamental values and lessons that my own instructors taught me. I strive to make every training session meaningful and rewarding, even within a short period of time.

How has kendo helped you connect with the local community?

Through organizing tournaments and serving as a referee, I have built connections with many people. I believe that the relationships I have been fortunate to develop through my continued involvement in kendo have also contributed to revitalizing the local community.

We spoke with Mr. M.S., recipient of the Sustainability Award (Individual), about his commitment to the Fukushima Ekiden and his involvement with the local community.

What inspired you to become involved with the ekiden team?

I competed in the Fukushima Ekiden when I was in high school. Later, when my child joined the team’s training program, I became involved as a staff member. Since this is a race that supported and shaped me as well, I have continued my involvement in the hope of contributing in whatever way I can.

What do you find most rewarding about your activities?

The greatest reward is seeing athletes whom I have known since their elementary school days grow and go on to compete in national championships and university ekiden races. Being able to witness and support their development up close is incredibly fulfilling.

How has the ekiden helped you connect with the local community?

When we first started, only a small number of people were involved. Today, however, we have established a system that enables athletes to participate regularly in training sessions and competitions. Our efforts may be modest, but I am pleased if they can contribute, even in a small way, to the local community.
